Breakaway Boat Rentals is an elite Veteran Owned Lake of the Ozarks boat rental company built on strong relationships, shared values, and a love for life on the water.

Breakaway’s Beginning

Breakaway Boat Rentals was originally founded in April of 2023 by Steven and Jennifer Benefield, who built the business from the ground up with care, integrity, and a deep appreciation for the lake community.

Steve, a United States Navy Chaplain Veteran, having spent most of his career assigned to the Marine Corps, carried the values of leadership, service, and responsibility into every part of the business. Alongside Jen, they created Breakaway to be more than a boat rental — it became a trusted experience where families and friends could “Breakaway” to disconnect from daily life and reconnect on the water!

Veteran and first responder support have always been a core part of Breakaway’s mission, and that commitment remains a cornerstone of who we are today.

Becoming a Patriot Adventures Company

In 2024, Christopher Stockton and Amanda Laing met at the Lake of the Ozarks and began to build a strong partnership and connection through shared values, entrepreneurship, travel, and a belief that the best businesses are built on a strong commitment to trust, transparency, service, and people-first leadership.
 

As a United States Marine Corps Veteran, Chris’ time in the Marines shaped his approach to leadership, discipline, and service. He is also the owner of UpStream Towing, LLC, a business known for reliability, professionalism, and service focus. 

Amanda brings a strong background in customer service and marketing, with a passion for helping businesses succeed through community-building, brand growth, and meaningful guest experiences — with a great appreciation for businesses that feel personal, authentic, and intentional.

A Shared Vision - Where Friendship & Community Comes Together

Through friendship and shared respect for service, Chris, Amanda, Steve, and Jen’s paths crossed naturally. What began as conversations about participating in and supporting Veterans through the Focus Marine Foundation, as well as shared values about family, business, and the lake, turned into a shared vision for Breakaway’s future.

In January 2026, Chris and Amanda officially acquired Breakaway Boat Rentals, with tremendous gratitude for the trust Steve and Jen placed in them to carry their business forward, and a deep respect for everything they built.

This transition is not about change for the sake of change — it’s about continuity and thoughtful growth.
